چکیده

Causatives have been subjected to intensive scrutiny by linguists in recent years. Cross-linguistic studies suggest that the formation of causatives re3ects the real world perception of cause-result relations, though some studies contradict this 2nding. The aim of this study is to explore the underlying principles that determine the way an event is encoded linguistically in Saisiyat, a Formosan language. Following Croft’s model of idealized single events, we promote the study of causatives to the discourse level. The results show that the iconicity of language is re3ected in the ordering of linguistic elements as well as their grammatical integrity.

The bridge of iconicity: from a world of experience to the experience of language

Iconicity, a resemblance between properties of linguistic form (both in spoken and signed languages) and meaning, has traditionally been considered to be a marginal, irrelevant phenomenon for our understanding of language processing, development and evolution. Rather, the arbitrary and symbolic nature of language has long been taken as a design feature of the human linguistic system. In this pa...

Iconic Coding of Conceptualization: Hakka Reduplicative Constructions

Previous studies on the meaning of reduplication have proposed plausible accounts of the relatedness among various senses associated with it. The iconicity principle is often acclaimed as the motivation behind this process. However, reduplication can be associated with senses such as intensification and attenuation that are inconsistent with each other. The latter even seriously challenges the ...

Iconicity and Arbitrariness in Italian Sign Language

T  studies recognizing sign languages as full-fledged languages (Stokoe ; Klima and Bellugi ) were undertaken while the formal linguistic paradigm was evolving. Within the formal linguistics framework it was assumed that what distinguishes language is that it is generated—independently from every interaction with other cognitive activity—by a separate part of the brain. If this i...

From iconic handshapes to grammatical contrasts: longitudinal evidence from a child homesigner

Many sign languages display crosslinguistic consistencies in the use of two iconic aspects of handshape, handshape type and finger group complexity. Handshape type is used systematically in form-meaning pairings (morphology): Handling handshapes (Handling-HSs), representing how objects are handled, tend to be used to express events with an agent ("hand-as-hand" iconicity), and Object handshapes...

Diagrams and metaphors: Iconic aspects in language*

The problem of iconicity has been a recurring theme in linguistic inquiry into the nature of the linguistic sign. The property of iconicity includes not only the narrow category of sound symbolism, but also the broad categories of isomorphism and metaphor. This paper surveys recent research, and offers a classification of diagrammatic and metaphorical iconicity in language. Problems of structur...
